Spanish Barbel Fishing Including the Mighty Comizo

Although in the UK we only have Barbus Barbus in our rivers in Spain things are quite different, I believe that including the small mountain river barbel there are 9 species to be found in the Iberian peninsula, some of which are very special indeed.

In fact my search for one of these species actually led me to Ruidera itself back in 1995. I had seen some photos of this species in a German angling magazine and was most impressed, The things that most impressed me was the size of these fish and their massive heads, of course I am talking about Barbus Comiza. It took me almost two years to find the right venue for these monsters culminating in almost two continuous months searching the Guadiana river system until I made contact with my very first Comizo and what a fish over 25lb in weight!

Over the years we have landed many of these extremely fast fish to incredible weights, many over 30lb and the biggest to date over 35lb. These are of course very special fish and a very special venue; in fact I would say that there is no other venue that holds such a head of large barbel.

Of course it help to know which lagoon to fish as although present in all the overall size of the fish varies from water to water this is because of factors such as head of pike present, size and depth of the lagoon and the amount of natural food available apart from the actual head of barbel present, all these things take years to decipher and can make it almost impossible for someone just visiting for a weeks holiday. Most of the fishing is Carp style tactics though on some of the lagoons you can float fish for fish up to the 20lb mark but as you can imagine strong tackle is needed. Apart from the Comizo Barbel there are another two species in these waters, the Mediterranean barbel (Barbus Giraonis) and the small head barbel (Barbus Microcephalus) both of which grow to the 20lb mark absolute musts for the dedicated specimen hunter.

As if there is not enough water to explore apart from the lagoons we also have a lake (Peñarroya) 8 km in length just a couple of minutes from the accommodation.
