Andalusian Barbel Adventure

After years of exploring many of southern Spain’s mountain ranges I came across what can only be described as one of the most stunning mountain rivers I have ever encountered. Set against the tremendous backdrop of the Sierra Morena and Sierra Madrona, old abandoned mines add even more character and I often find myself thinking about the harsh life in this area in times gone past, soon to be brought back to reality by a tug on the line as another barbel tears off down river.

Eagles and vultures soar overhead as the river winds its way through many miles of gorges forming deep pools, shallow runs and small rapids. Apart from its beauty this is one of the last true Andalusia barbel (barbus Sclatteri) rivers, one only has to observe the water and soon these barbel become apparent, yellow flashes can be seen as the fish twist and turn revealing their presence. Many small fish can be seen but with a little patience soon the bigger examples become apparent, touch ledgering, float and even fly fishing tactics work well.

Lots of other wildlife can be seen as this is true mountain terrain, one of the last wild areas left in southern Europe. The Iberian lynx lives in this undisturbed area along with wild boar, two or three species of deer and even mongoose, otters are occasionally spotted in some of the pools along with their young. With accommodation available in a comfortable rural house only a few miles from the river, this really is a fantastic new opportunity on offer to the true barbel enthusiast.
